Looking chirpier than they probably felt, on their way to China to cover the war there. Still, they had recently acquired a taste for benzedrine in NY so maybe this was what kept them going.
What a pleasing coincidence: I was just reading Christopher Hitchens's article in The Atlantic on Edward Upward, with its numerous refernces to Auden and to Isherwood, when I stopped by for a dose of Charlie Parker and found this photo. Nice to put a [new, to me] photo to a face, and all that.
It may be benzedrine, I'll concede -- but you'll note that all four hands are well out of view . . . .
